De-colonizing Minds – Colonialism and Its Modern-Day Consequences

Welcome to the dedicated page for “De-colonizing Minds,” an Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers program hosted by APIDA e.V. This initiative took place in Berlin from February 8 to 19, 2024, and aimed to confront the enduring legacies of colonialism and inspire transformative change in today’s interconnected world.

A Visionary Initiative in Berlin

This groundbreaking project, funded by the European Union and coordinated by Jugend für Europa – German National Agency, went beyond a conventional training event. It became a movement for understanding, challenging, and reshaping the narratives of colonialism. Through collaborative learning, intercultural dialogue, and creative expression, participants explored the roots of colonial history and its lasting impact on contemporary society.

A Diverse Gathering for a Unified Purpose

The project brought together 23 youth workers, facilitators, and trainers from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. These individuals embarked on a shared journey of discovery, reflection, and action, united by the belief that understanding the past is essential for building a more equitable and inclusive future.

Objectives that Chart the Course

The program centered on objectives designed to enlighten, inspire, and drive meaningful action:

  • Raising Awareness: Exploring the historical legacies of colonialism and its ongoing impact in modern contexts.
  • Promoting Inclusivity: Advocating for anti-oppressive practices to create equitable and diverse environments.
  • Fostering Dialogue: Encouraging open discussions among youth workers and their communities about the persistent consequences of colonialism.

A Tapestry of Activities

The program offered an engaging blend of formal and non-formal learning methods to stimulate critical thinking and creativity:

  • Workshops and Discussions: Delving into the history and ongoing influence of colonialism in Europe.
  • Cultural Explorations: Study visits to the Humboldt Forum, Villa Oppenheim, and a Decolonial City Tour provided hands-on insights into colonial history.
  • Creative Expression: Participants engaged in a storytelling workshop and developed an innovative card game focused on colonialism, demonstrating the potential of gamification as an educational tool.
  • Reflection and Evaluation: Daily reflection groups and a final evaluation session ensured the consolidation of learning. Each participant received a Youthpass Certificate to recognize their achievements.

Impact and Legacy

The project’s impact was immediate and profound, equipping participants with the skills and understanding needed to address colonialism’s modern-day repercussions. Its long-term vision focuses on fostering sustainable decolonial practices in youth-oriented organizations, contributing to the global discourse on equity and diversity.

A Call to Action

“De-colonizing Minds” was not just an event—it was a call to action for ongoing engagement, critical thinking, and advocacy for a world where diversity is celebrated, and equity prevails. By equipping youth workers with the knowledge and tools to confront colonial legacies, the project has set the stage for transformative change.
